Is Madonna's 'I Don't Give A' An Attack On Guy Ritchie?

On the MDNA track, Madge takes aim at marriage with lyrics like 'I tried to be your wife, diminished myself.'

As buzz around <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/madonna/artist.jhtml">Madonna</a>'s 12th studio album, MDNA, continues to build and early reviews begin to pour in, those who have heard the album are talking about some pretty direct lyrics that seem to take aim at Her Madgesty's ex-husband, film director Guy Ritchie. <a href="http://www.billboard.com/#/news/is-madonna-targeting-guy-ritchie-on-new-1006368352.story?utm_source=most_recent" target="_blank">Billboard</a> reports that in a song called "I Don't Give A," the pop queen takes on the topic of a marriage gone sour. "I tried to be a good girl/ I tried to be your wife/ Diminished myself/ And I swallowed my light," she sings. "I tried to become all/ That you expect of me/ And if it was a failure/ I don't give a [bleep]." <div style="background-color:#000000;width:428px;"><div style="padding:4px;"><iframe src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:728690/cp~vid%3D728690%26instance%3Dmtv%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A728690" width="420" height="236" frameborder="0"></iframe></div></div> Madonna's rep, Liz Rosenberg, declined to comment to <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/earshot/madonna-guy-ritchie-song-mdna-296850" target="_blank">The Hollywood Reporter</a> on whether Ritchie was the subject of the song, saying, "She has not explained the lyrics and if they are about someone specifically ... [but] I appreciate that people will speculate." <a href="/news/articles/1597084/its-official-madonna-and-guy-ritchie-to-divorce.jhtml">Madonna and Ritchie</a> announced that they were divorcing in October 2008. The two share custody of sons Rocco, 12, and David, who was adopted from Malawi in 2006. After some early public <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1078843/Making-love-Madonna-like-cuddling-piece-gristle.html" target="_blank">acrimony</a> on Ritchie's part, the two reportedly enjoy a friendly relationship. Just a year after their divorce, when Madonna set out to adopt another child, Mercy, from Malawi and her bid was initially denied, Ritchie came to his ex-wife's defense, saying in a <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20270169,00.html" target="_blank">statement</a>, "Madonna is a fantastic and loving mother who cares deeply about her own children, and children who may need additional help and support ... She is motivated only by being a caring parent who seeks to share some of the advantages and opportunities that her life has given her." Madonna was eventually granted permission by the Malawian courts to adopt Mercy. Later, in a December 2011 interview with <a href="http://www.details.com/celebrities-entertainment/movies-and-tv/201112/guy-ritchie-sherlock-holmes#ixzz1f2eNQyDM" target="_blank">Details</a> promoting his hit film "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," Ritchie set out to correct any misconceptions about his marriage to the pop star, saying, "By the way, I enjoyed my first marriage. It's definitely not something I regret. The experience was ultimately very positive." Both have moved on from their relationship. Ritchie welcomed a son with girlfriend Jacqui Ainsley last September and Madonna is said to be in a serious relationship with dancer Brahim Zaibat, who is 29 years her junior. MDNA — Madonna's first album since 2008's Hard Candy — hits stores on March 26 in both standard and deluxe editions. Though the reception to the first single, "Give Me All Your Luvin'," has been mixed, early reviews of the album have been largely positive, with the U.K. magazine <a href="http://www.attitude.co.uk/viewers/viewcontent.aspx?contentid=2436&catid=culture&subcatid=music&longtitle=THE+VERY+FIRST+EVER+MDNA+REVIEW" target="_blank">Attitude</a> issuing an all-out, four-star rave. "Much of MDNA is about having fun, but despite that, this is a dark album," Attitude reviewer Matthew Todd wrote. "MDNA is a f--- you to her marriage, the life that came with it and partly to herself for losing her identity in a partnership. She's out to recapture who she is, and she has demons to slay."
